National Weather Service Investigating Tuesday Night Storms

Amarillo National Weather Service Investigators were conducting storm surveys Wednesday to assess any damage from the storms on Tuesday night. At one time on Tuesday night, there were five Tornado Warnings in effect for counties in the Central Texas Panhandle at the same time. Social media posts showed a rope-like Tornado in south Amarillo and another showed a funnel cloud to the east of I-40 and Airport Blvd. Other possible Tornadoes were reported near he Amarillo International Airport, Umbarger, Hereford, Clovis, Groom and Lefors. The National Weather Service received 1.93 inches from the storms. Numerous Flash Flood Warnings were issued as the Tropical Storm system dropped torrential amounts of rain. Flooding was reported in Potter, Randall, Deaf Smith, Oldham, Swisher, Castro, Swisher and Parmer Counties. The rain caused a land-slide on the road leading into Palo Duro Canyon and it was closed for a time Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, it has since reopened. Potter County Sheriffs reported that the Canadian River north of Amarillo was running at 10-feet deep. They are discouraging anyone from getting off-road in the river bed area.
